Warsaw is the city of Fryderyk Chopin.

It was here that he spent twenty years, more than half his life. Here he played in the city's gardens, made numerous friends, and experienced his first youthful love.

Fryderyk Chopin learned to play the piano in Warsaw. He composed his first piece at the age of seven. A year later, in 1818, he gave his first public concert in the largest palace in the city. Hailed as a musical genius, he became a piano virtuoso and a renowned composer of the Romantic era within a few years.

A Varsovian by birth, a Pole by heart, and a citizen of the world by talent. It was to Warsaw that Chopin's heart was brought, at the composer's request, immediately after his death. Transported from Paris in 1850, it remains here to this day, as does the world's largest collection of memorabilia related to the life and work of the piano poet. Some of the over 7,500 items were added to the #UNESCO "Memory of the World" list in 1999.
